I'd like to talk about a time I really needed to use my imagination during my first half marathon training. It was two years ago, and I decided to sign up for the race, even though I had almost no running experience. I could barely run two or three kilometers, and my job as a UI Designer in Shanghai kept me super busy, often with long hours. Honestly, many of my friends thought I wouldn't stick with it.

In the first week of training, I struggled. I was gasping for breath after just three kilometers, and the next day, my legs were sore to the point where climbing stairs felt impossible. A few times, I thought about skipping my runs after long workdays, but then I remembered my commitment to the race. I imagined how disappointed I would feel if I gave up and forced myself to jog in a nearby park instead.

To keep myself on track, I created a training plan. I sketched out the distances I needed to run each week on my phone and checked off each session on my calendar. This visualization helped me stay motivated. As I progressed, I could gradually increase my distance, going from three kilometers to over fifteen.

On race day, the atmosphere was electric. But around the fifteen-kilometer mark, my legs felt heavy, and I wanted to stop. Just then, I saw spectators cheering us on and handing out water. It hit me that I had put in so much effort, and I couldn't waste it now. I focused on reaching the next aid station, step by step.

I ended up completing the 21 kilometers in just over two hours, and crossing that finish line was exhilarating. This experience taught me that persistence is key. It really showed me that many things aren't as daunting as they seem if you break them down. Since then, I've been more patient facing challenges at work and in life, knowing that progress, no matter how small, adds up.
