In Shanghai where I live, people tend to go for different shopping experiences depending on what they need. For daily necessities, supermarkets and convenience stores are most popular because they're everywhere and open late - you'll see 24-hour FamilyMarts near every metro station. But for clothes or electronics, big shopping malls like the one on Nanjing Road I mentioned earlier are preferred since they offer variety and the chance to try things out properly. What's interesting is how online shopping has changed habits - many younger people now browse in physical stores but actually buy later on Taobao for better prices. That said, weekend markets and small boutique shops still have their charm for finding unique items you wouldn't get online.
