Part 1 (Interview) is the opening phase of the IELTS Speaking test. Lasting 4–5 minutes, this section involves the examiner asking the candidate a series of questions on familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies, and hobbies. The questions are straightforward and designed to help candidates relax and demonstrate their ability to communicate basic information clearly and accurately.
Importance for IELTS Speaking Band
- Assessment Focus: Responses in Part 1 are evaluated using the same criteria as the rest of the Speaking test: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.
- First Impression: Part 1 allows candidates to make a positive first impression by showing their ability to answer simple questions naturally and confidently.
- Everyday English: The topics and questions reflect real-life situations, helping examiners judge how well candidates can use English in daily conversations.
- Example: If asked, “Do you work or are you a student?” a candidate might answer, “I am a university student. I study engineering, and I enjoy learning about how things work.” This response demonstrates the ability to provide relevant information using correct grammar and vocabulary.
Performing well in Part 1 can help build confidence for the rest of the test, but it is important to answer fully and avoid giving only one-word responses.
