Part 2 (Long turn) is the second section of the IELTS Speaking test. In this part, the examiner gives the candidate a task card with a topic and several guiding points. The candidate has one minute to prepare notes and then must speak for one to two minutes without interruption. The examiner listens and may ask one or two follow-up questions when the candidate finishes speaking.
Importance for IELTS Speaking Band
- Fluency and Coherence: This section assesses the candidate’s ability to organize ideas and speak at length without frequent hesitation or repetition.
- Lexical Resource: Candidates are expected to use a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, demonstrating flexibility and precision.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The ability to use varied grammatical structures accurately is evaluated during this extended response.
- Pronunciation: Clear and understandable pronunciation throughout the long turn is essential for a higher band score.
For example, if the task card asks the candidate to describe a memorable journey, the candidate should address all bullet points, such as where they went, who they traveled with, and why it was memorable. Speaking fluently for the full time and covering all aspects of the task shows the ability to communicate effectively, which is key for achieving a higher band in the IELTS Speaking test.
