Part 3 (Discussion) is the final section of the IELTS Speaking test. In this part, the examiner asks the candidate a series of questions connected to the topic from Part 2, but at a more abstract or general level. The questions require the candidate to express opinions, justify ideas, compare, speculate, and discuss broader issues. This section typically lasts four to five minutes.
Importance in the IELTS Speaking Band
- Fluency and Coherence: Candidates must speak at length, link ideas, and develop answers logically.
- Lexical Resource: A wide range of vocabulary is needed to discuss abstract topics and give detailed responses.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Complex structures are often required to explain, compare, or hypothesize.
- Pronunciation: Clear pronunciation helps convey ideas effectively in extended answers.
Part 3 is significant because it tests the ability to think critically and communicate complex ideas in English. The examiner evaluates how well the candidate can support opinions and handle more challenging language tasks. For example, if Part 2 was about a memorable journey, Part 3 questions might include: "How has travel changed in recent years?" or "Do you think it is important for people to travel?" This section helps determine the candidate’s proficiency in engaging in a meaningful discussion, which is essential for higher band scores.
