Part 3a person who you think is good at planning things (e.g. trips, weddings)

When governments plan a society's future, are there more advantages or disadvantages to involving all citizens in the planning?

Band 7.5 sample answer

Getting citizens involved in planning has clear benefits but also some drawbacks. The main advantage is that it leads to more inclusive policies-when people from different backgrounds contribute ideas, the plans better reflect real needs. For example, in Shanghai's urban renewal projects, residents' feedback helped preserve local wet markets while modernizing infrastructure. However, widespread participation can slow decision-making. I saw this when my company redesigned an app-collecting every team member's opinion created delays, though the final product was stronger. That said, when governments balance efficiency with public consultation, like how Hangzhou involved cyclists in planning its bike lanes, the results tend to serve communities better.
