Part 3a time when you had to pay more than you expected for something

Why do some people spend money on things they don't really need?

Band 7.5 sample answer

People often buy things they don't really need because they're paying for feelings or experiences, not just objects. For example, when I bought those expensive running shoes for my half marathon, I didn't just need the shoes-I wanted the excitement and confidence they gave me. It's the same with things like trendy gadgets or luxury items in Shanghai. People might not *need* them, but they enjoy the way these things make them feel, even if it's temporary. Compared with buying something purely practical, emotional purchases can feel more rewarding in the moment. That's why people often go beyond their budgets for things that bring joy, even if they're not essential.
