I'd say there are definitely more famous people now compared to the past, mainly because social media makes it so much easier to gain visibility. Back in the day, you needed traditional media coverage or exceptional talent to become famous, but now platforms like Douyin allow ordinary people to go viral overnight. For example, in Shanghai, I've seen local street food vendors suddenly become internet celebrities just because someone filmed their cooking skills. That being said, this kind of fame often fades quickly unless they can keep producing interesting content - it's easier to get noticed but harder to stay relevant long-term.
