I'd say background music in shops definitely helps with sales, mainly because it creates a more pleasant shopping atmosphere. When customers feel relaxed, they tend to browse longer and buy more. For example, in Shanghai, I notice myself spending more time in Uniqlo stores when they play their soft instrumental music compared to silent clothing shops where I just grab what I need and leave quickly. That said, the volume and genre matter a lot - loud pop music like in my team-building event would probably have the opposite effect and drive customers away.
