Should there be rules about what people can wear at work?

I think workplace dress codes are necessary, but they should be practical rather than too strict. The main reason is professionalism - when I'm meeting clients as a UI designer in Shanghai, for example, I need to look polished to build trust, but creative enough to show my design sensibility. My company allows smart casual, which strikes that balance well. That said, some industries like banking might need stricter rules because first impressions really matter there. The key is finding rules that suit the job's actual needs without making employees uncomfortable.
