What do you think of the view that the best way for individuals to help society is by paying taxes?

That's an interesting question-I'd say taxes are important but not the only way to contribute. Paying taxes does fund public services like schools and hospitals, which I see here in Shanghai where my taxes help maintain good infrastructure. But what really makes a difference is when people go beyond that-like my high school math teacher Mr. Wang who volunteered extra time to help struggling students. That personal effort created change no tax payment could. Of course, taxes are necessary, but society also needs people's direct involvement-whether through volunteering, mentoring, or just helping neighbors. The best approach is probably doing both: fulfilling tax duties while also giving time where you can make a personal impact.
