I think it's definitely possible to make genuine friends online, especially with how much time people spend on digital platforms these days. The key is having shared interests or goals-that creates a foundation for real connection. For example, in my UI design work, I've met several colleagues through online design communities, and some have become close friends because we constantly exchange ideas and feedback. That said, online friendships do require more effort to maintain over time compared to seeing someone regularly in person. You have to be intentional about keeping the conversation going and finding ways to connect beyond just messaging.
