I'd say animals deserve strong protections, but not identical rights to humans. The main reason is that human society has complex needs animals can't participate in - like laws or education. For example, in Shanghai where I live, we have animal welfare laws against cruelty, but pets obviously don't vote or pay taxes. That said, I do think we've learned from stories like Charlotte's Web that animals feel pain and form bonds, so treating them humanely matters. It's about finding that balance between respecting their lives while recognizing human responsibilities are different.
