Does consumerism always have a positive effect on society?

Well, consumerism definitely drives economic growth, but it can create some unhealthy pressures too. The main issue I see is how shopping apps and short video ads constantly push people to buy things they don't really need. For example, I often find myself scrolling through Douyin and suddenly wanting some trendy kitchen gadget just because an influencer made it look cool - even though my tiny Shanghai apartment has no space for it! That being said, consumerism does help businesses innovate and improve products, which benefits society overall. But we should be more mindful about what we're actually buying versus what ads make us feel we need.
