In cities like Shanghai where I live, high-rise apartments are definitely the most common-they're practical for fitting so many people into limited space. My own place is on the 15th floor, which gives great views but means dealing with elevator queues every morning. Out in the countryside near Hangzhou where I grew up, you'll see more traditional two-story houses with courtyards-my grandparents' place has one where we used to dry tea leaves. The trade-off is clear: city living sacrifices space for convenience, while rural homes offer room but often lack amenities. That said, recently some younger people are choosing modernized countryside villas if they can work remotely.
