Many people in Shanghai do seem uncomfortable with complete silence, which makes sense because we're used to constant city noise - traffic sounds, phone notifications, office chatter. For example, in my design studio, colleagues often play background music or keep podcasts running while working, saying total quiet feels unsettling. That said, I personally crave quiet moments like in Fuxing Park I mentioned earlier, especially after long hours staring at screens. So while urban life conditions us to expect noise, some of us actively seek out silence to recharge.
