I think shows become popular mainly because they connect with people's daily lives or interests. Like the cooking show I mentioned earlier, it's popular because it makes cooking feel approachable and fun, which appeals to many working professionals who want to eat well but don't have much time. In Shanghai, I've noticed short food videos on Douyin are huge - they show quick recipes using local ingredients, so people can easily try them after work. That said, some shows gain popularity just because they're controversial or dramatic, but those usually don't last long. The ones that stick around actually solve a problem or bring real value to viewers.
