I'd say a society without consumerism sounds ideal in theory, but in reality, it would create some practical problems. Consumerism drives innovation and gives people choices-like how in Shanghai, we have everything from high-tech gadgets to handmade crafts because businesses compete to offer something unique. For example, as a UI designer, I appreciate how consumer demand pushes companies to improve app interfaces constantly. That said, the downside is obvious-people sometimes buy things they don't really need, just because ads make them feel they should. The key is balance-keeping the benefits of choice without letting shopping define our happiness.
