I'd say visiting people at home is still quite common in China, especially among close friends and family. The main reason is that sharing a meal together at home feels more personal and intimate than meeting outside. For example, in Shanghai where I live now, my colleagues and I often visit each other's apartments for hotpot dinners - it's much cozier than restaurants and we can chat more freely. That said, with everyone being so busy these days, casual drop-by visits without planning have become less frequent compared to when I was younger. People tend to schedule home visits in advance now.
